My name’s James. I’m a 31 year old professional drummer based in Brighton and currently play with Matthew And The Atlas (Communion Records) and Clever Thing. With well over 1’000 gigs and countless hours in the studio under my belt, I am a safe and reliable pair of hands (and feet) for any musical situation from songwriting to samba.

 

Over the course of my career, I have been lucky enough to play with a diverse and very talented selection of musicians. From the pop world, I have played with and recorded Atomic Kitten, Abs (ex 5ive), Kelly Clarkson, Westlife, Mike Batt and been on tour opening for Beyonce and Katie Melua.

 

From the rockier/folkier/indie end of things, I have played with Inner Mantra (with Ace from Skunk Anansie), Autumnred, Windmill, Jim Stapley, Luke White, South Central, Common Tongues, Blueskies, Will and the People, Joe Janiak, Little Wonder and Phantom Runners. Over the course of this, I’ve had the chance to tour with/open for Vampire Weekend, Counting Crows, St Vincent, Life House, Status Quo, Larkin Poe, Goo Goo Dolls, Daughter and The Glitter Band amongst others. I’ve also had the chance to play most of the major festivals in the UK and Europe.

 

I first picked up a pair of stick aged 11. Inspired by my dad and the drum fill from ‘Don’t look back in anger’ by Oasis I subsequently spent the next 7 years annoying my very understanding family, neighbours and friends playing along to everything I could get my hands on.

 

I moved to Brighton when I was 18 to attend BIMM and was fortunate enough to be able to turn professional fairly rapidly through a combination of sessions, teaching and functions.

 

I have a pretty diverse taste in music (as most musicians do) but some of my favourites include At the drive-in, Michael Jackson, The Beatles, Bowie, Mile Davis, Radiohead and The National.

 

I also can provide backing vocals and play guitar.

 

I am proud to play Tiki drums, Zildjian cymbals, Vic Firth sticks, Evans Heads, ACS in ears and use a Porter and Davis BC2.
